Never date your best friend
Always be original
Sometimes rules are meant to be broken
Best friends Dave and Julia were determined to never be cliché high school kids—the ones who sit at the same lunch table every day, dissecting the drama from homeroom and plotting their campaigns for prom king and queen. They even wrote their own Never List of everything they vowed they'd never, ever do in high school.
Some of the rules have been easy to follow, like #5, never die your hair a color of the rainbow, or #7, never hook up with a teacher. But Dave has a secret: he's broken rule #8, never pine silently after someone for the entirety of high school. It's either that or break rule #10, never date your best friend. Dave has loved Julia for as long as he can remember.
Julia is beautiful, wild and impetuous. So when she suggests they do every Never on the list, Dave is happy to play along. He even dyes his hair an unfortunate shade of green. It starts as a joke, but then a funny thing happens: Dave and Julia discover that by skipping the clichés, they've actually been missing out on high school. And maybe even on love.
Review: This book shook me! The author did really well in luring the readers in with the:
1. cute 'Never' list - which I found really interesting. I haven't encountered any book with this kind of 'apparatus' to make the story run.
2. Undoubtful chemistry between Dave and Julia - Their chemistry is amazing! I was 100% hooked in their chemistry. They were really fun and cute to read. I always looked forward for their funny exchanges of dialogue. It was just so warm and sweet and funny, like they really really belong to each other.
I have a very special emotional attachment to this book. That is why the ending frustrated me for like a week. I still can't accept it even now while writing this review. Just...WHY!? with imaginary tears is all I can do.
This book is actually a cliche. But if Adi is not behind the writing, I don't think it will turned out like this. He's just so good at making a 'cliche', 'cliche-mazing'.
At first, it frustrates me. I mean the first 90% of the book is like, they were there.. they were written for nothing. But then, I could not say that I didn't like this book because I love it. Then I realized:
There are just some things in life that looks perfect, feels perfect...but is just perfect in a sense. It is not really perfect in reality. There are circumstances that will make you throw away everything you worked hard for to make. It's sad, maddening and totally hurtful but at the end of the day, you will realize 'throwing it away' is actually a good and healthy move for you.
The author is amazing. Adi, you are amazing! I look forward for your next works!
I recommend it to romance readers out there, especially when you are someone who:
1. goes to Google and search for 'BFF LOVE STORY'
2. enjoys funny punchlines/dialogues
3. looking for an amazing chemistry between main characters
4. loves cute premise!
