The story revolves around Nishimiya Shōko, a grade school student who has impaired hearing. She transfers into a new school, where she is bullied by her classmates, especially Ishida Shouya. It gets to the point where she transfers to another school and as a result, Shouya is ostracized and bullied himself, with no friends to speak of and no plans for the future. Years later, he sets himself on a path to redemption.

Won the 19th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Award New Artist Prize.

I think this is the first ever book that I read where there are lots of character development. It's the kind of character development that is really nicely done and MUST BE DONE to accomplish how great this book is now.

I really feel the story because it depicts the world of bullying. Despite the theme of the book, the author made sure hope won't be lost here.

The plot, the setting, the exchange of dialogues, the confrontations--it were all realistic. It was like I'm reading a story from some of the cliques of our neighboring street.

I've seen this happened numerous times, but never actually know where both parties came from and why they were doing this.

It's nice this book exists; I got to take a glimpse of the small portion of this 'bullying' world.
