She swam up for what seemed like an eternity, with her chest so achingly empty it felt as if it had collapsed, seeing only white bubbles in front of her face until she broke the surface.
One moment of rashness, and fourteen-year-old Emily Slake finds herself amid hundreds of panicked and drowning people in the dark ocean waters off Sumatra. Miles from shore without a life vest, she resolves to survive. But in facing the dangers of the ocean, the desperation of her fellow survivors, and her own growing exhaustion, Emily must summon wits and endurance she's not sure she has.
Striking out on her own, Emily encounters Isman, a frightened young Muslim boy, floating in a life vest. Together they swim for their lives, relying on Emily's physical strength and Isman's quiet faith.
Based on a true story, Overboard is both a riveting tale of survival and a sensitive portrayal of cross-cultural understanding in a time of crisis.
Review: This book is an easy read for me. I do not usually pick up books like this but Heavens! Good thing, I did! It left me breathless and gasping for air. Figuratively.
Emily is actually not a likeable person. At least, in my opinion. But she grew on me. She is a very brave person and I look up to her. What she did there--fight for her life, her survival--is a very pretty and tough job to do. I don't know if I can even do that. She is kinda selfish at the start of the story and then she matured as the story progresses.
It is kind of refreshing to see or read how real life disasters could affect a person's morality and virtue and just how they choose to take up their next step in continuing their life. It's lonely, hopeless, and scary to fight the horrors of death alone. This book shows us what we need to survive. This book shows us that there are many form of love and you can pick it up wherever and whenever. This book shows us we are not alone in life. This book shows us we are strong and could fight the struggles of life. Even, In a shark-filled sea!
I recommend it to everyone. Don't skip this book and at least, give it a try.
