East Antarctica: The coldest, most desolate location on Earth. Two-and-a-half miles below the ice cap is Vostok, a six thousand square mile liquid lake, over a thousand feet deep, left untouched for more than 15 million years. Now, marine biologist Zachary Wallace and two other scientists aboard a submersible tethered to a laser will journey 13,000 feet beneath the ice into this unexplored realm to discover Mesozoic life forms long believed extinct – and an object of immense power responsible for the evolution of modern man.

I received an arc digital copy of this book via iRead Book Tours in exchange for my honest and unbiased review. Thanks for the copy! All are my own opinion and is not compensated by any individual, organization, or company. This might contain minor spoilers.
Vostok impresses me with its synopsis. This is a story about preserved Mesozoic beasts over at Antarctica that gives the impression that it will showcase adventure, action, suspense and mystery—all in one package deal. I signed up for this because I wanted to avail of that package.
This is the very first book I read under Steve Alten. Though, the book is actually a sequel to The Loch, this could be read as a standalone.
This book is indeed one thrilling experience with terrific creatures that will scare you upon reading. Good plot idea and well thought out characters. It just weirded me out when the aliens come in. I still don’t get it until now. I mean it is good that the author tries to scope out the premises of the novel but it caught me really bad and it left a mess in my mind.
The book is very confusing. It’s like you don’t know when you’ll be under attack. You cannot predict how it will hit you though I’m pretty sure what is coming. I am totally misdirected.
I must say though that Vostok is a very promising novel. Maybe someone who is very appreciative and open and fast at picking up things will enjoy this novel.
Steve Alten is the New York Times and International bestselling author of fourteen novels, including the MEG series about Carcharodon Megalodon, the 70-foot, 100,000 pound prehistoric cousin of the Great White shark and Domain trilogy, a series about the Mayan Calendar’s 2012 doomsday prophecy. His work has been published in over 30 countries and is being used in thousands of middle and high school curriculum as part of Adopt-An-Author, a free teen reading program, which he founded with teachers back in 1999.
